Science Olympiad

Over the last 30 years, Churchill has made 11 trips to nationals placing as high as 2nd!

We are extremely proud of our dedicated students who have participated
on our Science Olympiad Team.

Description: Science Olympiad is a competition that includes a variety of different Science-related events. Events range from forensics to bridge building to anatomy to wave physics and much more.  Some events involve studying while others involve building or lab work.  Churchill will have tryouts and form 2 or more teams in Sept.  Students will then prepare for the events for many months.  In the Spring we compete at regionals against other area middle schools.  There are also possible travel trips to invitational tournaments TBD.   If we do well, then we move on to state and maybe even the national competition.

Coaches:  The Churchill coaching staff is typically made up of several teachers from campus and other community members plus parents and former team members often lend their expertise to various events. Currently, our teacher advisors are Mrs. Seefloth and Ms. Hollenbeck with the support of several other teachers. Community members Dr. Joe Domagalski and Barbara Beeman will assist the team as they have done for many years.

Tryouts:   Tryouts are held early September.  Please watch BTV for accurate dates and times, as well as parent/information meetings.   There will be multiple tryout tests and/or activities.  Students can choose how many tests and activities they want to partake in to help their chances of making the team.

Coaches make their selections and post the team 1-2 weeks after the application deadline.  Roster decisions are final, no conferences or parent meetings will be held regarding team selections.  The sci oly team is an extracurricular/club activity.  Due to the time commitment of Science Olympiad, students will not be able to participate with other Churchill after school teams/clubs.

Selection Criteria:   There is no magic way to make the Science Olympiad team, no one thing that ensures you will make the roster.  In general, we are looking for the best and brightest.  We value intelligence, hard work, attention to detail, teamwork, leadership, and creative thinkers... Churchill is full of these kinds of kids so competition for team spots is tight.  Team selections are made by a group of teachers and coaches looking at many different factors.

Practice Schedule: Science Olympiad is a BIG commitment.  Once on the team, students can expect to have practices several times per week.  After winter break the schedule intensifies and student schedules vary depending on their events.  We also do frequent weekend sessions.  Team members need to be prepared to make Science Olympiad a top priority.

Team Size: We will form an A team, B team, and C team.  Each team is made of 15 students.  We typically have 150+ applicants.  There will be team members selected from all grade levels.  There will also be 5 freshmen chosen from last year's team.  If you are not selected, please try again the following year and you are encouraged to explore Churchill's other academic team options.
