Elective Course Descriptions 2026-2027  Our middle school elective program gives students the opportunity to explore interests, discover new talents, and build important skills beyond the core academic subjects. Our program is designed to support a well-rounded middle school experience and help students begin discovering interests that may shape future academic and career pathways. Please note, course offerings are subject to change based on enrollment and teacher availability.

6th Grade Electives:

Ambassador 6th Grade Exploration Wheel:

  • Intro to Art: This class is an introduction to the Elements of Art. Students learn about line, space, shape, form, color, and texture. With these elements, students will create pencil drawings that go from 2 dimensional shapes to 3 dimensional forms through shading in their drawings.  Students will also learn about Color theory with the understanding of how to blend color using the color wheel.
  • Intro to Technology: This class is an introduction to using technology to be a better student!  Students will learn Google tools, including Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Google Drive, learning to utilize these amazing tools to benefit their academic growth.  We will also explore creative expression through Adobe Express. Students will express their creativity digitally!
  • Intro to Music: This class is an introduction to reading music and performing in a musical ensemble here at Churchill. The class includes listening to music and writing about what they hear, singing to learn musical scales, clapping and instrumental exercises to learn rhythm, and discussing how music changes media that we see everyday.

Diplomat Beginning Art: This class is an introduction to the Elements of Art. Students learn about line, space, shape, form, color, and texture. Students will have the opportunity to choose from flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, tuba and electric bass (must have and use their own amp in class). Students will learn to read, write, and speak music. Students will perform in at least one formal concert. 

Diplomat Choir: Choir is designed for the student who enjoys singing. Students will learn basic note reading skills and will learn to sing in an ensemble to produce a common goal.

7th and 8th Grade Electives:

Beginning Band: No experience required. Students will have the opportunity to choose from flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, tuba and electric bass (must have and use their own amp in class). Students will learn to read, write, and speak music. Students will perform in at least one formal concert.

Intermediate Band: This elective is designed for the student who has one year of playing experience on their band instrument. Students continue to refine their fundamental skills on their instrument and will continue growing their ensemble skills. Students must be approved by our Band Director, Mr. Antillon, before entering. 

Advanced Band: This elective is designed for the student who is advanced in their music skills and with their instrument. The Advanced Band is 0 period and is open to any student playing a band instrument who meets the minimum requirements (Completing MYP year 2 and/or can play the concert Bb, Eb, and Ab scales, chromatic scale (full range of instrument), and can play a variety of irregular rhythms and complex meters) Seventh and Sixth graders must have teacher’s permission to participate in this high achieving group. Students are expected to audition for various honor bands. Students must be approved by our Band Director, Mr. Antillon, before entering. 

Choir: Choir is designed for the student who enjoys singing. Students will learn basic note-reading skills and will learn to sing in an ensemble to produce a common goal. 

Drama: In Drama, you will briefly explore the history of theater, then move into the skills of stage acting and production. It is an appropriate class for all experience levels, from beginner to those who have previously been in plays. You will increase your comfort level on stage through theater games, study, practice, and performance. In the spring, we produce a full-length play for our friends and family. 

Student Leadership: The Student Leadership Class is a course for students who are looking for opportunities to positively impact their lives and their community. We build on collaborative skills and habits of mind, students will gain knowledge and expertise in leadership skills, including goal setting, effective communication, organization time management, and collaborative strategies. This class also makes up the school's ASB (Associated Student Body) to meet the needs of the student council. Members work together to solve current school and community issues by working collaboratively and independently on events, activities, project proposals, portfolios, and presentations. BTV Media Production: This class creates our daily news show, Bulldog Television [BTV].  Students have the opportunity to anchor daily news, create student segments, research and create Public Service Announcements, and explore digital photography. In addition, students in BTV may become Yearbook photographers and editors.  This elective is best for students who already have basic knowledge of computers and video editing.  This is not an introduction to technology elective.  Application Required

7th Grade Art: This class is a continuation of Elements of Art with the emphasis of how to lay out your drawing or artwork using the design elements such as: balance, movement, contrast, unity, rhythm, and pattern. Projects could include wire sculpture, ceramics, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, origami, and textiles, with guided instruction. Students will have art for 2 quarters.

8th Grade Art: This class is for students with previous art experience who want to pursue personal interests in a selected Medium of Art. Students should be able to work independently with guided instructions. Students will have art for 2 quarters.

7th Grade Technology Interaction: Are you ready to build, create, and innovate? In this hands-on course, you'll explore multiple units, which may include Minecraft engineering, 3D printing, coding, robotics (including LEGO Spike Prime and Spheros), and stop motion video production—all while developing skills that are in huge demand. Whether you love gaming, making things, solving problems, or bringing your ideas to life, this class has something for you. No experience necessary—just bring your curiosity!. Students will have Technology for 2 quarters.

8th Grade Technology Interaction: Are you ready to build, create, and innovate? In this hands-on course, you'll explore multiple units, which may include  Minecraft engineering, 3D printing, coding, robotics (including LEGO Spike Prime and Spheros), and stop motion video production—all while developing skills that are in huge demand. Students who took Technology Interaction in 7th grade will complete more advanced work using techniques and programs that they learned previously. Students will have Technology for 2 quarters.

Ambassador AVID: AVID is a program for 7th and 8th grade students who aspire to be college-bound at the end of their high school career. AVID is taken as an elective, and it's a class for students who are in the “academic middle” (2.0-3.5 GPA) with high potential, strong desire to attend a four year college, and have individual determination to succeed in the classroom, but may need a little extra support from the AVID class to thrive in rigorous, advanced coursework.  Students get individual guidance, practice skills such as note taking, marking the text and public speaking, participate in group tutorials and team building activities and attend field trips to colleges in and around the Northern California area. AVID students must maintain at least a GPA of 2.0-3.0, and they should be good natured and have excellent attendance. Application Required

Ambassador Spanish 1: Get ahead of your World Language requirement. This is a rigorous, high school level class with above grade level instruction. Students should expect homework on a regular basis. Prerequisite: Must have a B or better in 7th Grade English class. 8th Grade Only

Ambassador Office Assistant: Office Aides will assist the Front Office Staff with daily duties such as greeting students, parents, and guests, running passes to the teachers, collecting attendance from substitutes, and other tasks. Students will be graded on their participation efforts. Application Required
